Unico International School

My experience in education started after I graduated from University Malaya in 1997 with a Bachelor of Social Science. I taught at a government school from 1997-1999 and discovered the school was using teaching methods from the 1960s! Nagging, scolding, caning, physical punishment, mental torture and even worse, brain numbing memorising without understanding. All these outdated methods killed the students’ passion for learning.

I refused to use such punitive ways of teaching. I knew there had to be a better way. No caning, scolding, punishing or memorising, but learning through fun and happy activities in a respectful learning environment. Traditional punitive methods of teaching cause students to burn out! Students quit learning because they are frustrated with the rigid education system and inflexible ways of teaching.

I decided that changing the system of teaching was the key to developing students who enjoy learning. To realise my dream education system, I established my first tuition centre (Ikhtiar Maju Jaya Tuition Centre) in 2001. I applied lively learning methods in my lessons where the educator interacts informally with students who are encouraged to ask questions and search for information in encyclopedias. Students also studied in groups where they were encouraged to express their ideas as well as derive conclusions about what they learnt. I created a whole new learning process and the outcome was astonishing! Students loved it and made remarkable progress. Even parents joined in! After establishing 7 tuition centres in my hometown, Segamat, I established TTBS Nursery and Alpha Ocean Kindergarten in 2017 to start fun learning with young children.

After 13 years of hard work and determination, the Ministry of Education granted IMJ Education Sdn Bhd the licenses to establish UNICO Primary School and UNICO Secondary School in 2020. These schools have been established by educators who have passion for education. We are a team that truly focuses on education by providing a great school environment with excellent university facilities. Our commitment to provide quality education has resulted in UNICO conducting the local Malaysian school curriculum that is also supplemented by an international UK curriculum.

However, true education is not limited to school buildings and facilities. True education is not limited to bilateral relations between students and teachers in school. True education starts with meaningful interaction amongst parents, students, educators and school administration as parents’ expectations and attitude affect their child’s academic progress and mental health. Creating the perfect pathway to a robust education system in UNICO will take time, effort and sweat.
